- Numbers and Dates
- Any words with CAPITAL letters
- Nouns (but NOT adjectives or adverbs or even verbs)
- Anything that is not expected to be paraphrased and has low frequency (that is, it is not repeated several times).
What were the words that we didn’t choose as Key Words?
Right! Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs!
Why not? Yes, because they are very easily replaced with synonyms or paraphrases. These words exist but in a different form.
Scan is a sub-skill which is based on Key Words and aims at locating the Key Words in the passage.
Scan’s responsibility is taking us to the approximate location of the question in the passage.
Skim is a sub-skill which is based on paraphrases.
Its aim is locating the paraphrases so that we can base our responses on evidence.
